Durante o mês de maio, os engenheiros florestais Arthur Vrechi e Eduardo Mattos estiveram na Suíça para um encontro com o Dr. David Forrester, pesquisador do Instituto Federal Suíço de Pesquisas em Florestas, Neve e Paisagem – WSL. A viagem é parte do projeto de inovação em desenvolvimento pela Geplant e que conta com o apoio da FAPESP, por meio do programa Pesquisa Inovativa em Pequenas Empresas (PIPE-FAPESP).
O Dr. Forrester é uma das principais referências mundiais no uso da modelagem ecofisiológica em povoamentos florestais e desenvolve, há mais de 10 anos, trabalhos em universidades e institutos de pesquisa da Austrália, Alemanha e Suíça. Atualmente o pesquisador trabalha na divisão de manejo florestal do WSL com foco no manejo de plantações mistas.
Ao longo de três semanas os pesquisadores da Geplant se dedicaram a tópicos associados à modelagem dos processos de crescimento de florestas buscando aprimorar seus conhecimentos para descrever as interações entre genética, manejo e ambiente, integrando-as às suas ferramentas de trabalho. Um dos pilares da plataforma GPT (Gestão da Produtividade) é o uso de conceitos de ecologia da produção.
Assim, os modelos de crescimento processuais (ou ecofisiológicos), que descrevem as interações entre planta e ambiente, permitem explicar a influência dos fatores genéticos, ambientais e de manejo sobre a produção de madeira. O tempo desprendido em terras suíças também possibilitou o contato com pesquisadores de diversas partes do mundo promovendo uma rica troca de experiências sobre manejo florestal.
Em um mundo de rápidas e constantes mudanças, a habilidade de traduzir os efeitos ambientais em números confiáveis que suportem a tomada de decisão é fundamental para reduzir e mitigar os riscos associados à produção florestal. Neste sentido, a Geplant sempre busca inovar, trazendo ciência e tecnologia de ponta para alavancar a competitividade do setor florestal brasileiro.

Crossing borders I: Geplant researchers experience immersion in Forest Ecophysiology in Switzerland
On May/2018, forest engineers Arthur Vrechi and Eduardo Mattos have been in Switzerland for a meeting with Dr. David Forrester, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute on Forest, Snow and Landscape Research – WSL (www.wsl.ch). The trip is part of the innovation project under development by Geplant and with the support of FAPESP, through the PIPE Program.
Dr. Forrester is one of the main references in the world in the use of ecophysiological modeling in forest stands and has been working for over 10 years in universities and research institutes in Australia, Germany and Switzerland. Currently, the researcher works in the forest management division of the WSL with focus on the management of mixed plantations.
Over three weeks, Geplant researchers focused on topics related to the modeling of forest growth processes, seeking to improve their knowledge to describe the interactions between genetics, management and the environment, integrating them into their working tools. One of the pillars of the GPT Platform (Total Productivity Management), which is being developed by Geplant, is the use of concepts of ecology of production.
Thus, the process-based models or ecophysiological models, which describe the interactions between plant and environment, explain the influence of genetic, environmental and management factors in regarding to wood production. The time spent in Swiss lands also enabled the contact with researchers from different parts of the world promoting a rich exchange of experiences on forest management.
In a world of fast and constant change, the ability to translate environmental effects into reliable figures that support decision-making is crucial to reduce and mitigate the risks associated with forest production. In this sense, Geplant always seeks to innovate, bringing science and technology to leverage the competitiveness of the Brazilian forestry sector.
